In short

What is international SEO?

The short answer

International SEO

International SEO is the combination of technical and content choices that lets one website serve multiple countries and languages.

With hreflang, a clear URL structure and localised content, you show search engines which page belongs to which country and language, so every visitor automatically gets the right version.

Why language and country signals count — they tell search engines exactly which version to show to whom. That way your Dutch page stays in its home country and your translations strengthen each other instead of competing. The right signals take care of that — and also help AI engines trust you as a source.

Who it is for

Two starting points, one clear route.

You want to scale internationally

You are already doing well at home and want the same growth in Belgium, Germany or beyond — with a foundation that scales with you.

  • From choosing countries to hreflang — a clear plan
  • One structure that you expand step by step later

You already have foreign visitors, just little structure yet

You see visitors from abroad coming in while they get the wrong language or drop off. The foundation needs structure.

  • We organise language, country and URLs
  • You keep your existing rankings

Why structure pays off

Scaling smoothly starts with hreflang.

As soon as you offer the same content in multiple languages, you need to tell search engines what belongs to which country. Do that and every language version works in your favour.

  • Google shows the wrong language version to your visitors
  • Your own translations compete for the same rankings
  • Foreign visitors drop off and you never learn why

Frequently asked questions

About international SEO

  • Hreflang is a small piece of code that tells search engines which language and country version of a page belongs to which visitor. If you offer content in multiple languages or for multiple countries, hreflang prevents the wrong version from appearing or your pages from competing with each other. One language and one country? Then you can usually skip it.

  • All three can work. A ccTLD (for example .de) gives the strongest country signal and needs a bit more maintenance in return. A subfolder (site.nl/de/) is easier to manage and shares the authority of your main domain. A subdomain sits in between. We choose based on your ambition, your team and your budget.

  • Translate selectively rather than everything, always with care. Start with the pages that generate revenue or leads and localise them well — including tone, examples and keywords. Raw machine translation often costs more trust than it delivers — editing makes the difference.
