A fresh website often attracts few visitors on its own, which makes lead generation via your website tricky. Every page should have a clear search intent and be neatly optimised, but at the start SEO on its own takes time to build traffic. Below are a few strategies to get leads from a handful of visitors all the same.

Invest in a lead magnet

Start by creating and promoting lead magnets. A new business often works with a tight budget, so build recognition for your brand first. Over time that pays for itself, provided you approach it strategically.

A lead magnet is a trade. You offer something valuable in exchange for contact details, usually an email address. That is how you fill your email list, which opens up one of the strongest channels there is, email marketing. Once someone is on your list, you can reach them again and again, build trust and turn visitors into customers. According to HubSpot (2026), around 40% of marketers actively use email marketing in their strategy.

Choose the right type of lead magnet

There is plenty of choice. A quiz or poll, an infographic, a webinar, a demo, a competition, a free trial or a special offer. It always comes down to one thing, value. Deliver that and you will see it in your conversion. A poll or quiz is easy to spread via a share campaign on social media. With Google, Facebook or LinkedIn Ads you reach more of the right people.

Example of a type of lead magnet

Link your lead magnet to your content

Content serves a double purpose. People read your piece and leave their details. So place your lead magnet above and below your article. If you are a pianist, offer a few free beginner lessons in exchange for contact details. It is a free way to collect leads that most people overlook. One condition, your lead magnet matches your content. Get that right and you perform noticeably better.

Use a strong call to action

Close with a call to action full of strong verbs and headlines that grab attention. Spark curiosity, because eight out of ten people read your headline and only two click through. If your headline earns the click, Google gets the signal that your page deserves to rank higher. CityCliq tested four variants of the same page and the headlines with a verb won with an improvement of no less than 90%.

In short, verbs are powerful. Put them up front.

Why lead generation on your website counts even more in 2026

When I wrote this, low traffic was mainly a beginner's problem. Now almost everyone has to deal with it. Since October 2025, Google has been answering more and more questions in the Netherlands with an AI Overview too. In the US, around 68% of all Google searches already ended before anyone clicked through in early 2026. So the visitors you do bring in are worth their weight in gold.

That is exactly why your own email list is gaining strength. It is the only channel that is entirely yours, independent of an algorithm that shifts again tomorrow. Catch every visitor with a lead magnet, build that list and you keep an audience you can reach again and again. Also make sure your brand shows up by name in your field, because AI increasingly takes its recommendations from there.
