One development is turning the entire SEO landscape upside down. Can you guess which SEO challenge that is?

Thinking of voice search? Content marketing, or backlinks perhaps? It is all about AI. And it is redrawing your game on two fronts β€” how you are found and how you create content.

Stop guessing. Time to unpack it.

The real challenge in a world full of AI content

AI writes a smooth article on just about any topic in seconds. The web is filling up at lightning speed with generic texts that all look alike. At the same time, Google increasingly gives the answer itself, at the top and summarised by AI. That way it captures a large share of the clicks.

That is your double challenge. Standing out in an endless stream of content, while clicks become scarcer.

Informational searches in particular feel this first. The searcher reads the answer and is satisfied. Your opportunity therefore shifts from 'grabbing as many clicks as possible' to 'being the source the search engine trusts and recommends'.

The good news? This is exactly where your opportunity lies. There is one area where a language model always falls short β€” and that is exactly where you win.

Your secret weapon is real experience

An AI knows the theory. You know the practice.

Google increasingly assesses content on E-E-A-T β€” Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust. That first E, first-hand experience, is something an algorithm can only borrow. So show that you have really done it.

An example from my own home. Recently I looked into how to fit a shower enclosure myself, because I fancied tackling that job on my own. I did my research, found an article β€” and halfway through, that same article pushed me towards an appointment form. Time wasted. And that site lost me for good.

That is the trap you want to stay clear of. Give people your real knowledge, your own examples, your own figures. That lifts you above the mass of generic content.

Use AI as a lever, you stay in charge

AI is no replacement for your craftsmanship. AI speeds it up.

Let a language model do the heavy groundwork β€” coming up with an outline, bundling rough research, delivering a first draft. Then you add your own special sauce with your experience, your tone and your examples. That way you combine the speed of the machine with the credibility only you have.

Keep one golden rule in place. Check every fact and every claim the machine serves up. Your name is on it, so your standard counts. An AI delivers speed, you deliver the truth. You can read what the invisible mark in AI texts means for your visibility in our piece on the AI watermark.

How to write content that wins, in 6 steps

1. Solve one concrete problem. Start with the reader, deeper than the keyword alone. Take a training website. Els is learning Arabic so she can talk to her loved ones, Kees is getting his beer certificate to start his own business. Such stories solve a real problem. That is exactly the content Google rewards.

2. Earn the click with your headline. Your headline decides whether someone keeps reading, so invest time in it. Spark curiosity. Write, for example, "6 reasons why a sauna is good for you" with "Number 4 surprises most people" underneath. One condition β€” number 4 really delivers on that promise.

3. Anchor your topic in a cluster. Choose your main theme and build supporting articles around it. Around "search engine optimisation" you target keywords such as "on-page SEO", "SEO copywriting" and "writing content for SEO". Together they form a strong cluster that confirms your authority on the theme. Link those articles to each other, so reader and search engine alike discover your whole story effortlessly.

4. Learn from the top 10. Search for your topic and see who is at the top. What do they do well and where do they leave a gap? Also take a look at page three or four β€” there you see exactly what the winners do tackle. Fill those gaps and deliver the freshest, best answer. Freshness wins twice β€” an article that includes the latest is more often correct and is cited more often.

5. Give practical and honest advice. People read your article to get started with it right away. Give them that satisfaction. Concrete, actionable, with a call to action that sparks enthusiasm.

6. Connect your content and make it citable. Add relevant internal links with natural anchor texts and keep your on-page in order β€” title, meta, alt texts, headings and a clear URL. Also write in a way a search engine can pick up easily. A direct answer under a clear heading increases your chance of being cited as a source.

Do this consistently on your best pages and you build content that ranks today and gets recommended tomorrow.
