You have put time, effort and commitment into a well-thought-out SEO strategy and then Google suddenly turns against you. An update can push your content down into the lower regions and hand your competitor a head start. Unless you are prepared. Here is how to build future-proof SEO that withstands every next update.

Updates come with the territory, so build on rock

Since 2016 Google has rolled out more than fifteen major core updates, in recent years around three a year. And those are only the big ones. According to Search Engine Land, Google tweaks its algorithm around 4,500 times a year on average. Most of them show up as no more than a small ripple up or down.

The big updates are a different story, and that is exactly what you arm yourself against. The answer is surprisingly simple. User-friendliness. At its core, every update has the same goal: making the algorithm mirror what people find pleasant. Build for people and you build on rock that survives every update.

Illustration of how Google judges your website on user-friendliness

1. Make your site lightning fast

Speed is the foundation. Images make up a large part of a page's weight, so optimise them to take up as little space as possible. Note the difference between the size on screen and the file size. This matters especially on mobile, because the weight of mobile pages has grown sharply over the past ten years and Google puts mobile ahead of desktop.

2. Use a CDN

A Content Delivery Network, such as Cloudflare, places your site on servers worldwide. If someone from the United States visits your site hosted in Tilburg in the Netherlands, it loads via a server closer to them. Faster for your visitor, and better protected against attacks at the same time.

3. Think carefully about your content

People who search want to solve a problem, preferably right away. Do you give them that answer quickly, or does the reader have to wade through 5,000 words? If someone wants to know how high a garden fence may be, a short, clear answer helps more than an endless wall of text. If you are teaching your child to tie their shoelaces, a video says more than a thousand words. Give people their answer in the fastest, most pleasant way and you win.

4. Read your visitor with heatmaps

A heatmap tool such as Smartlook draws a heat image of your site. Where people click, how far they scroll, where their attention goes. That way you see exactly where visitors get stuck and where you can sharpen the experience.

5. Leverage your competitor research

Want to rank for specific keywords? Then start in Google Search Console. There you see which terms already bring you traffic. Also mark your most important actions as key events in Google Analytics, because more traffic only counts when it converts. Then take your best keywords and Google them. Look at the top ten and ask yourself what they do well. That is where the gaps lie for you to fill, whether in content, images, video or the overall experience.

The real future-proofing work, being ready for AI search

One shift outweighs all the updates of recent years. The rise of the AI answer at the top of the search results. If you want to be future-proof here too, make sure your content is bite-sized and quotable, with direct answers under clear headings. Build a recognisable brand along the way, because a search engine prefers to cite a source the whole web trusts.

So optimise for the long term, and for the person behind the search. If an update throws you off for a while, give it time, because Google often rolls back choices that were too strict. Consistently do what is best for your visitor and your traffic grows, update after update.
